Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, located in the Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa, has been recognised with four awards at the 2025 Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Awards, including the headline title of Best Family Villa in the World.
The lodge, which opened in 2016 and was first awarded Best Newcomer Lodge in Africa that same year, has steadily built a reputation for combining high-end safari experiences with family-friendly hospitality. This year, the villa was also awarded Best Pool Villa in Africa, Best Bush Lodge in South Africa and Best Wedding Destination Hotel in South Africa.
Unlike many high-end safari properties that position themselves as adult only escapes, Mhondoro has leaned into multi-generational travel. The property welcomes children of all ages, pairing its five-star service with features that appeal to families: a private villa that accommodates six, a communal design that extends to larger groups, and game drives that can be tailored to different interests.

The villa itself is self-contained, with a master suite and two further en suite bedrooms, a heated pool, outdoor lounge and boma, as well as a gym and massage room. A private chef, butler, and safari vehicle with personal ranger are included.
Mhondoro sits in a malaria free, 35,000 hectare reserve, which makes it an attractive alternative for international travellers who want the Big Five experience without health precautions. The lodge’s underground waterhole hide and custom built stargazing deck add to its differentiators in a competitive safari landscape.

Recognition from Haute Grandeur, often seen as one of the industry’s most global awards platforms, gives Mhondoro additional visibility in a market where safari properties increasingly compete not only regionally but also against luxury destinations worldwide.
While the awards are headline grabbing, they also reflect a continuity of performance. Since its debut, Mhondoro has maintained a steady presence on global award lists, positioning itself as a case study in how African safari lodges can sustain relevance over time while balancing exclusivity with accessibility.

The 2025 titles underline a broader trend. Lodges that can scale luxury experiences for both couples and families are finding recognition beyond regional categories, with Mhondoro now carrying a title that places it in direct conversation with global peers.
