Famed hypercar producer Pagani chooses Cape Town for the African unveiling of the Utopia Roadster. Sudhir Matai went to take a closer look.
The Mother City Meets Italian Artistry: Why Cape Town Was the Perfect Stage

Cape Town has been voted Best City in the World more than half a dozen times. The Mother City, as it is known locally, has become world renowned for its manicured vineyards, picturesque blue flag beaches, vibrant night life and a city centre that has an instantly recognisable mountain as its backdrop. It is no wonder, then, that Pagani choose this idyllic location for its latest creation, the Utopia Roadster to make its African debut.
Pagani Automobili has launched just three models in its 30 years of existence. Chronologically, these are the Zonda, Huayra and Utopia. Of course, there have been numerous special editions and track-only machines, but they are all based off the three models.
The latest branch in the family tree, which made its debut in coupe form in 2022, is the Utopia. A Roadster variant was shown for the first time two years later. It is this open-top version that we were privy to view, in person, at a glitzy event hosted by Pagani at a showroom in the Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront precinct. The event was the very first time that the Utopia had been shown on the African continent.
Sculpted in Habanero Red: The Design Anatomy of the Utopia Roadster

Well-known motoring media and influencers rubbed shoulders as they were the first to set eyes on the low-slung Italian exotic, looking resplendent in Habanero Red exposed carbon-fibre. If anything, the Utopia is even more arresting without a roof. Perhaps that is why Pagani is building 30 additional Roadsters than Coupes. All units of both body styles are already spoken for.
The Roadster has all the same alluring design elements as the coupe: the flowing lines of the curvaceous body, dual headlights, the wide lower grille, turbine-like taillights, signature quartet of tailpipes arranged in a square and, of course, the upward-swinging doors.
A Purist’s Sanctuary: Inside the Gated Manual Cabin

Peering into the cabin I note that this demonstrator is fitted with a manual transmission, which means it also has the company’s beautifully crafted, exposed mechanical gear-shift linkage, which is, in itself, a work of art. The uptake of manual transmissions outweighs automated versions by some margin, speaking to the driving engagement Utopia owners are expecting.
While admiring the interior, the head of Pagani MEA hands me the key… which is shaped like the car it controls – NICE! I prod the starter button to fire up the Mercedes AMG-sourced engine and the V12 barks into life, sound filling the glass and tile showroom, seemingly almost angry for having been woken from its slumber. I oblige the requests for a flare of revs. The large engine responds with incredible alacrity considering it is fitted with twin-turbochargers.
I kill the motor before we send anyone home feeling a little woozy. Once the engine is laid back to rest, I have a closer look around the cabin, enjoying its luxurious delights. Lightweight aluminium, exposed carbon-fibre and high-quality Italian leather abounds. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident. The steering wheel alone is milled from a single block of aluminium that starts off at over 40 kg…
Awakening the AMG V12: A Symphony of Twin-Turbo Power

For a brief moment I let my imagination wander as I picture myself piloting this rolling artwork along the Cape Peninsula, Pacific Coast Highway or the Amalfi Coast, slicing through the open gates of the manual transmission, letting the V12 sing… until I am interrupted by someone who also wants to check out the cabin. I guess the drive will have to wait for another day.
